Hello Manistee County! Spring is in the air, alright. Songbirds are in full orchestra, trees are budding, flowers are first to break free of the soil and the blahs of wintertime seem to exist a thing of the recent by.

Yes, times are a bit scary right at present with the outbreak of the coronavirus.

One matter is for sure, though, this terrible virus is reminding us only how small our wonderful globe really is – aye, we are in this together and you know what, nosotros'll become through it together, too.

This morning a group of cars drove by for a quick Happy 101st Birthday song for our own Edna Holmberg. Thank you to everyone who collection past and shared this special day with Edna. Even with social distancing the little things thing.

Just for now, that's what we must do – keep our distance, launder our hands (over and over and over), and we must exist patient.

We're going to do another drive through food pantry for our seniors from ix-11 a.thou. on April ten. This one volition be a fresh produce pantry. If nosotros're all staying home, I was thinking that produce was something a lot of yous are probably doing without.

Like I said, we'll get through this, together!

So, in looking ahead, I thought we might take a look back this week at the pages of our Senior Center Scrapbook, and remind you of how nosotros got to where we are now. Likewise, our staff has put together a neat little Discussion Maze y'all might like to play. I hope you savour information technology.

In flipping through the pages of our scrapbook, virtually of which are clippings from our slap-up local newspaper the Manistee News Abet, I found these neat tidbits of reporting:

Approximately 150 people attended Sunday'southward open up house which was a kick-off to Senior Citizen Calendar month at the Senior Center. Coffee, punch and cookies were served. (May 2, 1982)

When the Housing Commission announced the "Name the New Building" contest in April of this yr, open only to those 55 and older, more than 90 persons submitted 144 entries. Mary O'Brien, senior center director, handed the titles to the committee, who chose "Harbor View Apartments" as the official proper name of the new complex now beingness constructed almost the Century Terrace Apartments on Sixth Avenue. These were purchased and donated to the Manistee Senior Center for their meal program. (Sept. 29, 1983)

And finally, at least for now because peradventure nosotros'll practice this "looking back column" once again onetime soon, there was a Feb. xx, 1986, commodity in the Manistee News Advocate that was written past then staff author T.J. Johnson, that read, in part:

"The Manistee Senior Center is a squeamish place. As ane walks through the front end door of the eye 1 pauses and wants to duck back exterior to make certain a error hasn't been made. But it is the senior eye, afterwards all, not a living room – but a living room, nonetheless … at that place is a lived-in quality that hangs in the air and immediately relaxes, and it'due south not hard to empathize why the threescore or seventy senior citizens can exist counted on to drop past for a visit on whatsoever ordinary day.

The eye is run by the Manistee County on Aging and its purpose … is to help senior citizens with any problems they might be having. In addition to referring seniors to other agencies, the eye, itself, also offers a plethora of activities and services."

Nosotros're proud of our history here at the senior middle and we're grateful to the army of board members, directors, staff members and volunteers who came earlier u.s. to serve our honored "gilded oldies" – our senior citizens – equally we expect forward to the day when nosotros'll movement into our new Wagoner Community Middle.

Aye, we'll go through this coronavirus pandemic, and we'll get through it, together. Until then, think spring and like the Bonus Words in our Word Maze tells us: Live, Honey, Laugh!

I hope you have a safe and healthy calendar week, and remember to try something new.
